In the Shoreditch area of the East End of London during the late 19th century, Jewish cabinet maker emigres from the Baltic states formed a cabinet making colony. One of these was Morris Epstein and later his six sons.
In 1929, two of his sons, Harry, the designer and Lou, the cabinet maker formed H&L Epstein furniture designers and manufacturers to go onto create some of the best British Art Deco furniture, both in design and quality. Fifteen highly skilled craftsmen were employed mainly from Eastern Europe, making furniture often by hand and using the finest materials. Much Epstein furniture was commissioned to order, to allow customers to have chairs and other pieces of furniture made to suit their size or the spaces of the room it was designed to go in.
Showrooms were in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin.
