An imposing bronze sculpture by Jean Verschneider (1872-1943).
This large bronze figure of ‘A young Hannibal Strangling an Eagle’, with the eagle gilt patinated, is stamped ‘Jean Verschneider’, on the base as well as a circular foundry mark and inscribed ‘L N Paris J L’. Marked ‘41’ to the side of the foundry mark.
This stands for Les Neveux by J Lehmann, based in Paris. They were renowned for the production of bronze statues.
Jean Verschneider was a member of the ‘Salon des Artistes’ and exhibited there in 1908. In 1924, the quality of his work was recognised in the art competition of Summer Olympics.
