An Arts and Crafts Campaign Desk.
The legs are held together by folding brackets and secured in place by a plinth to the back.
Between the two drawers is a carved ‘S‘ and ‘O’ with a crown in between. To the bottom left hand leg is carved, ‘17838’. Inside one of the drawers, is a drawer liner, which has been stamped ‘Southwark Street SE1’. The desk may well have come from the government office of the London County Council, which resided in Southwark Street between 1889 and 1922.
The tiger oak and lyre shaped sides, make this an unusual yet very attractive piece of useful furniture
