A fine dining table by David Joel, in Indian Laurel.
This versatile drop leaf table, is skilfully designed and well made, with a quality exotic timber as would be expected from David Joel. David Joel’s label to the underside. This table dates from the late 1930’s to 1940’s.
David Joel was the joint founder of the distinguished Betty Joel firm. When his wife retired, he purchased the factory in 1937 to manufacture as David Joel Limited.
Like Betty he designed many beautiful pieces of furniture, often using the best materials. He used many woods available from the Empire at the time, including, Canada, Australia, British Honduras, West Africa and in this example from India. Indian Laurel is a close grained heavy wood, dark walnut in colour, and in the solid the waste factor makes it expensive.
