An Art Deco spelter and marble figure with two swans.
Two stylised swans sit on an attractive black marble and cream and green onyx base. Centred is a lady, with a dress of stylised folds and circular decoration.
The lady could be depicting Leda, an Aetolian princess in Greek mythology. Her myth gave rise to the popular motif in Renaissance and later art of Leda and the Swan.
Signed ‘Balleste’ on the back of the figure, in one of the folds of the dress.
Enrique (Henry) Molins Balleste was born in Spain in 1893 and moved to Paris where he became a respected Sculptor. He died in 1958.
