An Art Deco patinated bronze, by Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947), ‘Les Trois Filles’ (The Three Girls), signed ‘Chiparus’ and marked ‘Bronze’. A head and shoulder bust with deep green patination on a verde antico marble plinth.
Neighbourhood children often posed for Chiparus, at his atelier in the Barrault, Paris. It is recorded, ‘they were the least expensive models of all, content with a few sweets’. The end result was a series of sentimental and sometimes amusing pieces, known as ‘The Children Series’. These were early works before he developed his dazzling sculptures of young dancers, which were to become his trademark.
