A fine pair of side sofa tables in solid walnut by Gilbert Rohde (1894–1944). Each rectangular with a bottom shelf, curved graceful sides and raised on small block feet.
Gilbert Rohde was a pioneering American industrial designer who brought modernist, functional, and Art Deco designs to the US furniture industry, particularly transforming Herman Miller. In the 1930s and 40s, he collaborated with Brown Saltman, designing geometric Art Deco furniture, with various two tier tables a key feature of his work at this time. This pair of sofa tables providing a great example of his work.
His designs, which prioritized function for smaller, modern living spaces, are held in major collections including the Brooklyn Museum and MoMA.
Brown Saltman was a California-based manufacturer that, along with others like Herman Miller, produced modern furniture, often featuring light woods and clean lines, that helped define American modernism in the 1930s and 1940s. His partnership with manufacturers was key in moving American design away from traditional period reproductions towards functional, modern, and, for a time, highly streamlined and Art Deco designs.
