A quality Art Deco colonial console table by the highly respected firm C Lazarus of Calcutta. Made from solid teak with a contrasting ribbed banding to the table top edges and to the base of the plinth.
Charles Lazarus, the founder of C. Lazarus & Co, Calcutta, a well-known cabinet maker in the city was one of at least six children of Jacob and Eliza Lazarus, of Carmarthen, South Wales.
He was born there in 1823, his Jewish father had been a popular and well established jeweller and pawnbroker in the town.
After his parents died in Carmarthen in early 1835, Charles and his younger brother, sailed to Calcutta, to be with his older brother Benjamin who had come to Calcutta in the early 1830s and had quickly secured a position with George Page as a cabinet maker.
Eventually Charles and the now established Benjamin set up business together. At the beginning they were not wholly successful, but learning from their mistakes, they became the leading furniture designers and makers in the city, receiving a warrant for their business by The Viceroy and Governor-General of India.
The company continued well after their deaths.
