In 1900, at the age of 21, he won the Medal of Honor at the Salon des Artistes Francois.
The french aviator Jean Mermoz (1901 – 1936) is viewed as a hero in France and Argentina.
In the French Air Force – he fought against Syria and was deemed to have been one of the most successful pilots in the Syria operation.
He later went onto become an airmail pilot for the Latecoere company. Latecoere also designed planes.
In 1926, he disappeared in the Sahara and was taken hostage by the Tuareqs rebels – lucky to survive.
Air France appointed him in 1936, as general inspector and he worked in Argentina.
Sadly, he disappeared at sea 1936.
Metro stations, Pilot training schools and roads have all been named after him.
