A superb and bespoke cabinet on stand in pollard oak by Heal and Sons, 1935. Made for and presented to Tom Worthington, who played a pivotal role in the post World War II history of Heal and Sons by serving as the visionary design consultant and director of Heal’s fabrics from the late 1940s through the 1970s.
This very well proportioned cabinet, with a two door cupboard opening to four shelves and a drawer below and attached to a four stretcher stand. Both the cupboard and drawer with a pair of rectangular chrome handles. The cupboard with a working lock and key and the presentation label to the inside of the right hand door. The ivorine Heal’s disc to the drawer.
Under his influence, the textiles division became one of the most influential commissioning bodies in British design history. Tom Worthington‘s great skill was his eye for avant-garde design. For example, in 1951 Lucienne Day approached him with an abstract pattern called Calyx, which had been created for the Festival of Britain. Worthington was initially reluctant, but it went onto win international awards becoming a massive commercial success and begun a 25 year relationship with Day creating more than 70 patterns for Heal’s. He greatly encouraged young talent and Art School graduates, bringing many striking, modern prints into British homes, including designs by high profile designers, Barbara Brown, Peter Hall and Colleen Farr.
