A quality sculpture of a pair of seagulls riding the crest of the waves and mounted on a black variegated marble base. The bronze signed ‘G R Laurent Veritable Bronze’ and inscribed to the marble base, ‘Editions Reveyrolis Paris’.
The sculpture by Georges Henri Laurent (1880–1940) who was a prominent French Art Deco designer known for modernist, stylized animalier sculptures and functional decorative arts during the first half of the 20th century.
He was a member of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM), working alongside figures like Le Corbusier and Robert Mallet-Stevens to promote a harmony between utility and aesthetics.
Laurent designed for prestigious French design houses and editors of the era, including, Susse Frères, Robj Paris, Dunhill and Max Le Verrier.
He also produced a wide range of functional Art Deco items, including figural desk lamps, bookends, clocks and furniture, such as blackened wood cabinets that followed the UAM’s principles of simple and functional forms.
